Agility

Agility is a great way to build a shy dogs confidence or give a job to that exuberant  dog with loads of energy!

This six-week class is for (human) students who are new to agility. Dogs must be at least one year of age, in good health, and have previous basic training (sit, down, come, stay). Dogs must be comfortable working around other dogs and people, and be eager to work for delicious food, treats, or an exciting toy. In this class, dogs will learn skills that form the foundation for safely and successfully doing agility. These skills include:

  • Focus on the owner.
  • Introduction to jumping.
  • Introduction to agility obstacles.

A successful agility team relies on a strong relationship between dog and handler. This bond enables the handler to communicate with their dog by teaching correct obstacle performance. Foundation, games, and fun exercise set you and your pooch on your way toward becoming a great agility team!

Note: This class may be taken more than once. Instructor approval is required to enroll dogs less than one year of age.

***4 students are required for all Agility classes offered.***

Fly Ball

flyballFlyball is a dog sport in which teams of dogs race against each other from a start/finish line, over a line of hurdles, to a box that releases a tennis ball to (be caught when the dog presses the spring-loaded pad), and finally back to their handlers while carrying the ball.

Flyball is run as a relay, with teams made up of four dogs. The course consists of four hurdles placed 10 feet (3 m) apart from, a starting line six feet (1.8 m) from the first hurdle, and the flyball box 15 feet (4.5 m) from the last one – which makes the entire course 51-foot (15.5 m) long! The hurdle height is determined by the shoulder height of the smallest dog on the team. Under current North American Flyball Association (NAFA) rules, this should be 5 inches (12.7 cm) below the withers height of the smallest dog, to a height of no less than 7 inches (20.3 cm) and no greater than 14 inches (40.6 cm).

Current EFC (European Flyball Championship) rules limits the height to no less than 17,5 cm and no greater than 35 cm. Each dog must get its ball all the way across the start line before the next dog crosses. Ideal running is nose-to-nose at the start line. The first team to have all four dogs cross the finish line error free wins the “heat”. Penalties are applied to teams if the ball is dropped or if the next relay dog is released early.

Conformation

“Conformation” is the official name for dog shows. While they may seem glamorous, the true purpose of Conformation Showing is to evaluate breeding stock. A dog’s “Conformation” – his overall appearance and structure – is an indication of his ability to produce quality, purebred puppies. This is what is being judged in the ring, and the reason mixed-breed and spayed/neutered purebreds are not eligible to compete. Many times a new exhibitor will get started in dog shows by finding a mentor (usually the breeder from whom they acquired their puppy). Many AKC clubs also offer “handling classes” to teach owners how to present their purebred dogs to judges at dog shows.

Rally

A successful stepping stone from the AKC Canine Good Citizen® program to the world of obedience and agility, AKC Rally is a new dog sport that is taking the nation by storm! Rally offers both dogs and handlers an experience that is fun and energizing. Teams move at their own pace in a manner very similar to rally-style auto racing. Rally was designed with the traditional pet owner in mind, but can still be very challenging for those who enjoy higher levels of competition.

A Rally course includes 10 to 20 stations, depending on the level. Scoring is less rigorous than traditional obedience competitions; communication and a sense of teamwork between handler and dog is encouraged, and perfect heel position is not required. Rally’s main objective is to produce dogs who are well-behaved and reflect positively on the sport of Rally at all times and under all conditions – including at home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs.

Policy on Missing AGILITY classes.

While we understand that things do happen, the price for group classes takes into account the trainer working with everyone during the group class. If you need to miss a class, you can schedule a 30 minute make-up class at Urban Pooch Training & Fitness Center for a cost of $50/make-up session. Thanks for understanding!
